You start the seven-day trial in the direct edition with “Try for 7 days”, without an account or email address. Before that, the app reads no device identifier and sends nothing to the trial server. An unverifiable time anchor or an expired offline trial requires a connection; settings are kept.
License window of the direct edition. The purchase page shows the purchase status.
Link to this feature ›Activate a direct edition licenseDirect yes
Enter your license key in the activation field. Short keys stay concealed until you reveal them. For a permanent license, the key and a random device ID go to the license server. The serial number is not sent. Under “Already Purchased?”, confirm your purchase email address with an eight-digit code to restore the license on this Mac. This starts neither a trial nor another purchase. If code delivery is unconfirmed or the reply to the code check is missing, retrying first reconciles the existing request; a missing check reply can be settled with the same code until it expires after ten minutes. A running request to the license server can be ended with Cancel Request or Esc; its result then counts as unknown, and your entries are kept.

Link to this feature ›Recheck the licenseDirect yes
Recheck the license status and read the feedback in the license window. A running trial is checked online at launch and at least every four hours. Once the server has confirmed the end of the trial, the app checks the trial by itself only at the next launch; Check Again asks right away. A permanent license is designed to work offline. A permanent license asks for its status by itself at every launch and then, while the app runs, at most once every 24 hours. This sends the signed license receipt (product, license ID, random device ID) and a one-time request number to the license server, not the key. Without a connection the saved state stays; if the server reports the license as revoked, it no longer counts.

If you agree, the app checks for updates once a day. After the welcome it asks you once; until you answer it does not check, and you can change it any time in Settings. The check sends no dock settings, device ID or version number; the server sees only normal connection data. Copies without the built-in updater check daily only if you turn on “Check for updates automatically”.
Direct edition.
Link to this feature ›Install or download an updateDirect yes
For an update it finds, the app downloads it, verifies it, installs it and restarts. With “Update automatically” this happens by itself; the switch is off by default. Copies without the built-in updater open the download in your browser and explain how to replace the app manually.
